Struggles of Math Class by Trinity Woessner

Math class. This is so stupid! When would learning about inequalities ever be helpful! I’m pretty sure if this were a life or death situation inequalities would lead to death she thinks. She lets out a small and quiet sigh. Picking up a pen she pulls her attention off the teacher and lesson to her open notebook. She rests her chin on her hand and falls into her art.

A girl slides down a cave tunnel. Her fiery red hair was messy and unkempt. She turned her head to see her blonde spikey haired friend follow suit. The one with the red hair would be called Anna. The friend was Katie. They were both out of breath from running and navigating the trap of the cave.

“It must be here, it has to be.” Anna said referring to the Demon weapon. Though it was a low class one and its’ powers were not that spectacular, it was the closest and the only known one to them.

Katie nodded her head following along with Anna. After all her main goal was to find the lost Angel race. The Angels along with the Demons were lost as fast as they came, but they left scarring marks on the world. It has been 600 years since the last war between the two races, the world is still recovering. Angels left some of the powers in the genes of humans. Demons left weapons that had powers, some stronger than the makers themselves. It was rumored that when one touches a Demon weapon an Angel would come along with kill those by the weapon. It was also rumored that only a Demon could touch a Demon weapon.

An Akita stood with his head turned looking at the two girls as if waiting for them to continuing following him. Anna grunted and threw her head back still trying to catch her breath. Katie slowly got up and tried to dust off the dirt that covered her.

“Alright dog, we are coming.” Anna said as she grudgingly got up. She pulled her knife from her left combat boot. The dog’s name was Sake, it was Japanese for beer. They followed Sake farther into the cave.

“It will all be worth it, Katie, all those years planning in that orphanage, it will be worth it!” Anna spoke as they were reaching the end.

“You’ll get the weapon,” Katie started.

“And you will met the Angels.” Anna finished. The two smiled at each other, their bond of friendship strong. They had been friends after Katie had been left as a child and Anna was thrown to the wolves. The stories had filled their heads and now it was their life.

They entered a new cave, it was lined with luminous lights that seemed invisible. In the middle lay a burnt orange sword covered in dirt and rust. Anna raced to the sword and bent down, her eyes wide and smile that was truly a happy one. Katie waited near the edge of the cave for the Angel. Sake laid down with his paws crossed and his eyes drooping.

“It’s here.” Anna said as she went to touch it. When her hands touched hit the sword the cave walls around them began to shake. A voice was heard and it said:

“—Tryn! Tryn! Answer the question.” The math teach interrupted.

A girl shaken from her thoughts and the imaginary world froze. The anxiety flooded her and she began to shake and tears came to her. She turned to her friend and pleaded with her eyes. Her friend mouthed a word.

“15” She stuttered.

“Good” The math teacher replied while never turning his back from the white board.

She let out a breath and looked down at her sketch book that had two pages filled of characters and lore of the world. She sighed and rested her chin on her hand. She willed herself to be brought back to the world but she couldn’t. She turned to another page and began to draw. She let her mind wander and her hand draw mindlessly. The bell rang bringing her out of her mind again. Bringing up her stuff and walking to her friends she fell quiet and walked behind them down the stairs.

As she headed to lunch the old world of her story, the world she created it started to come back to her. She smiled and continued on with her mind filled with new ideas for her world.
